Central government allocates Rs.169.9 crore for two tourism projects in TN
The Union Ministry of Tourism has allocated Rs.169.9 crore for two transformative tourism projects in Tamil Nadu’s Mamallapuram and Devala near Ooty, under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure. These projects aim to significantly enhance tourism infrastructure while creating 5,000 employment opportunities in Tamil Nadu.
The two major initiatives include the Nandavanam Heritage Park in Mamallapuram and the Garden of Flowers in Devala, Ooty.
With its rich historical and cultural heritage, Mamallapuram has been granted Rs.99.67 crore for the development of Nandavanam Heritage Park, which seeks to transform the town into a global tourism destination.
The part project will merge modern tourism amenities with Mamallapuram’s natural beauty and cultural significance. The development will include:
- Cholai Vanam – A sprawling garden park
- Viharam – A cultural and activity space
- Maidanam – An open arena for events and gatherings
In addition to these, 14 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects worth Rs.574 crore will further boost Mamallapuram’s tourism and economy. These projects will feature:
- Retail shops and food courts
- Wellness retreats and event spaces
- Light and sound shows
- Adventure sports activities
- Sea-front restaurants and eco-friendly huts
- Heritage beach resorts
This comprehensive development is expected to generate 2,500 jobs, providing a significant boost to local employment.
The Devala project-Garden of Flowers- near Ooty gets an allocation of Rs.70.23 crore. Devala is known for its lush landscapes and heavy rainfall and is poised to become an alternative tourist spot to Ooty and Wayanad.
The Garden of Flowers will showcase the region’s stunning floral diversity, offering seasonal flower displays featuring tulips and windflowers, the statement added.
The park will also provide eco-tourism experiences, including:
- Trekking trails and birdwatching areas
- Exhibition halls and adventure rides
- Children’s play zones
- Hanging bridges and panoramic watchtowers
According to the central government, the project will include two PPP projects worth Rs.115 crore, featuring:
- A ropeway across the valley offers breathtaking views
- Camping tents on hilltops for adventure enthusiasts
This development is set to create 2,500 jobs, turning Devala into a sustainable and appealing tourist destination while alleviating over-tourism pressures in Ooty and Wayanad.
