The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru.

Addressing an august gathering on the occasion, the President said that innovative research and rigorous academic programme along with exceptional patient care have made NIMHANS an undisputed leader in the field of mental health and neuroscience. The Bellary model of community-based mental health service has created history. Now, the Tele Manas (MANAS) platform is using technology to reach out to those in need. President Murmu, Union Health Minister JP Nadda, and Karnataka Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah at NIMHAMS.

The President said that in the past, mental health issues and concerns were not given enough attention in some societies. In recent times, awareness about mental health has been rising. Unscientific beliefs and stigma associated with mental illnesses are a thing of the past, making it easier for people suffering from various ailments to seek help. This is a welcome development, especially at a time when many mental health issues are becoming epidemics across the world, she added.

The President said that awareness is increasing and patients can share their problems freely. She expressed happiness that NIMHANS has taken several initiatives like Tele Manas to facilitate consultation anywhere and anytime and Samvad Vedike to address mental health issues of children and adolescents.

The President said that the knowledge and life lessons gained from our ancient sages and saints can help us all develop a spiritual framework to understand the ups and downs of life that affect the balance of mind. Our scriptures say that the mind is the source of everything we see in the world. He praised NIMHANS for successfully integrating traditional methods like yoga with modern healthcare systems to alleviate mental and physical distress.

The President said that a healthy mind is the foundation of a healthy society. He expressed confidence that compassion and kindness, along with knowledge and wisdom, will guide doctors and other mental health professionals in providing the highest quality care at all times, and in all situations.
