Civil society & legal fraternity must work together to tackle human trafficking — Experts at Dayanand Sagar varsity legal aid clinic say
The Legal Aid Clinic of the School of Law, Dayananda Sagar University, organized a legal literacy program on the occasion of ‘World Day Against Trafficking in Persons’ on Tuesday at City Innovation Campus in collaboration with Karnataka State Legal Services Authority and the Bangalore Urban District Legal Services Authority.
The chief guest Mr. Varadaraj B., senior civil judge and member secretary, Bangalore Urban District Legal Services Authority, emphasized on the severity of human trafficking. “The problem of human trafficking is a very serious one. Academicians, law students, and the entire society need to work together to combat it,” he said addressing the gathering.
The guest of honour, Ms. Brinda Adige, founder-director of Global Concerns India and Convener of Mukti Alliance Against Human Trafficking and Bonded Labour, highlighted the importance of increased awareness to prevent exploitation of women through human trafficking, noting that women and children were the primary victims. She narrated the modus operandi of human traffickers and urged the students to be cautious even while sharing their personal information and pictures on social media.
The program was presided over by Dr. Amit Bhatt, vice-chancellor of Dayananda Sagar University, who remarked that the unfortunate reality was human trafficking and bonded labour constituted a billion-dollar industry worldwide.
Students, staff members, and deans of various schools attended the program.
